Week 12 Reading Reflection

Weekly Reading: Chapter 13 Kuratko

The section that stood out to me the most was when the explanation of the SWOT analysis. I have seen the SWOT analysis before, however this chapter does a good job in explaining it in more detail. I also thought it was interesting to see the research results of the value of strategic planning in entrepreneurial firms. One part of the reading that was confusing was strategic positioning. I think an example would have clarified it more. Two questions I would ask the author would be, “How do you know when it is more profitable to drop an enterprise, during the declining stage?” and “How do you make the transition from entrepreneurial to managerial easier?”  The chapter went well with my previous knowledge from my other classes. The only thing I would change is adding more real life examples.

Venture Concept No. 1

Venture Concept Write-Up

Opportunity
The opportunity started mostly from an overlooked market, which can be under the label of college students. However, as I further developed the idea it seems that many consumers residing in urban areas are also interested in a similar service/ product. This is a great opportunity to delve into because of the growing number of pet owners and pet related products.
So the main people who have the needs are:
  1. City pet owners
  2. College student pet owners
  3. Local pet owners

The nature of the need is that these pet owners want to have a place that is close location wise to allow their pets to play outside and also a place that they can bring to their pets to be taken care of temporarily. However, most of the time they need to go to locations that may not have everything that they need and may be far away.
Things to take into account
Changes in the environment creating this opportunity?
The changes that I have noticed is the increase of pet owners especially within the UF college campus. This increase in pet owners grow larger especially during the holidays as pets are a common gift. It is also becoming increasingly common to have more than one pet, then it has been in the past.
How is this market defined geographically and demographically?
As I said previously most of my market will be pet owners, probably from suburban areas. However there has been some demand in urban areas. Below are some charts showing dog and cat owners and their distribution within America. From what I can see, there are more cat owners in the northern states and more dog owners in the southern states.

How are customers currently satisfying this need and how loyal are they to whatever they use now?
·         Using their backyard as an area for their pet
·         Other local pet parks
·         Using a pet sitting service that is separate from the park

The loyal that these consumers may have to the local pet parks and pet sitting service might be strong, however if given the opportunity to make their trip to easier they would most likely chose it.

How big is this opportunity?

It really depends on the whether this trend of increasing pet owners will continue, however I think it has the opportunity to be a good opportunity to invest in.

Duration of window of opportunity?

The duration of the opportunity is not very long, because this idea can be easily imitated and also many companies have already tried to appeal to pet owners as a potential market.

Innovation
The service that I am introducing is opening local dog parks with differentiating amenities such as a pet sitting service and a toy rental store. This will be placed strategically so that it will target the intended market. The thing that I’m selling is the experience of visiting this dog park. If this is accomplished then both the owner and pet will enjoy the park and visit. The way I intend to make money is to through the toy rental, pet sitting, and potential donations.
1.       Toy rental: This will give owners a chance to borrow toys temporarily for their stay at the park. The price depends on the type of toy.

a.       Simple toys like a tennis balls will be inexpensive. For example two tennis balls will be 1.00 for two.

b.      More complex toys will range from 5-10 dollars.

c.       Owners also have the potential buy new toys within our inventory to keep

2.       Pet sitting: Will give owners a place to leave their pet if they need pet sitting service.

a.       This will also be dependent on the type of pet and how long they intend to stay. The range would be 10$-50$ per day and can be reduced if they stay longer than a certain amount of time.
b.      It will be a little  more costly for small increments of time and discounted for longer periods of time
c.       Overnight stays will be around 40-50 dollars
d.      Package deals could be made.

3.       Donations

a.       Donations will be collected in a box at the front desk
b.      Some incentive to donate would be pet perks such as getting discounts for pet sitting or pet products.
c.       Partnering up with potential businesses, which can provide us products.
Venture
Consumers are willing to buy my innovation because of the convenience and the experience that it could provide them. They can now get multiple services at one location, which makes the pet owner’s lives easier. This convenience is a big part of why customers would want to switch to my park. Potential competitors will not have all the amenities that I will provide and they lack unique qualities that could differentiate them from the other dog parks. The biggest thing that I would like to concentrate on is the customer experience and business location. This is because they play an important role in building and supporting my business concept.

Ways to continue the ongoing product of my service?

·         Constantly innovate and update service to match consumer needs
·         Generate good word of mouth to have free marketing people trust.
·         Great customer service with around 5-15 employees depending on the day
·         Event planning that correlates and complements the environment of the park
·         Initiating community based involvement and activities to form a close relationship with the consumers.

The Three Minor Elements

Most Important Resource
What’s Next
Future
·         Constant improvement that my service is willing to perform for my consumers.
·         Good Word of Mouth
·         Direct contact with the consumer and taking suggestions.

·         I would like to have a small convenient store so that owners will be able to purchase basic items for their pets.
·         Maybe expand to other locations with a large amount of pet owners.
·         I hope to be able to say that I have made my venture last successfully for five years
·         This first venture will help me achieve my future ventures by giving me experience in entrepreneur ship.
·         In the next decade I hope to make my mark on the music industry.

"Amazon Whisperer"

Revenue drivers? The different ways that I will make revenue is through the pet sitting service that will be provided within the park and potential donations. There will be small income coming from the toy rental station.

What’s the next thing your customers want? As of right now I’m not sure, the answer to this will probably be found by asking regular visitors. However I think a small store for buying basic pet needs would be helpful for them.

How will this next thing enhance your existing product/ service? I think it will increase overall convenience for pet owners. For instance if they need cat litter or dog food then they can make a quick stop at the store, while at the same time bring their pet to the park to play. It this could have the potential to bring in new customers and also create more loyal consumers.

Amazon search? There is nothing on Amazon that directly relates to what I’m trying to offer because my business is more service related. However for completion of this assignment I chose to look at a product made to entertain dogs. So that’s why I picked this Interactive Dog Toys by Nina Ottoson. Its purpose is to exercise the dog’s brain. I chose this product because I’ve never heard about this before.

What are the customer reviews about it? Most of the customers loved the durability of the product, however they didn’t like how some pieces fell off when it was tipped over. Other say that it has a great concept, however it is not challenging enough.

What are some changes you would make? Some changes that I would make is give it more optional accessories to attach to it to make it harder for the dogs.  This way they can have different levels of difficulty and it may entertain them for longer periods at a time.

Why would this product make a good addition to your service? This would make a great addition to the toy rental that my service might have. It may provide enough entertainment for the pet’s stay at the park and can also be used in the pet sitting service to stimulate the dogs mind.

Week 11 Reading Reflection

Week 11 Reading: Pisano

The most surprising thing about the reading is how organized it was. I like the question and answer format and the use of illustrations and examples. Content wise, I found the different types of innovations to be really interesting. I was aware that different types of innovation existed to an extent, however I didn’t know the specific impact that they could have on a company. The reading for the most part was easy to understand and the charts really helped explain the concepts. Two questions that I would ask the author are “What steps should be taken to ensure that all of your actions are aligned with the overall business strategy?” and “How do you determine whether your company should venture out with new/innovative products?” Overall, I enjoyed this article and there was nothing that I completely disagree with.

My Unfair Advantage

Marketing skills
V- This is valuable because I will know how to target my intended audience and really focus on their specific needs.
R- It's often common within big companies, however  a lot of start-up companies tend to overlook marketing.
I- Is not difficult to copy this, however once I find the best marketing method that is fitted for my company it may be more difficult to imitate.
N- There some substitutes for marketing skills, however this is usually a necessity
Direct contact with consumer group
V- This is valuable because we need to see what the consumer wants and suggestions in order to be different and competitive with the other pet parks.
R- Not a lot of big companies are able to physically meet their consumers so my company can use this as an advantage.
I- It will be difficult for larger companies to copy this, however it may be plausible for smaller companies.
N- There are other things that can provide the same benefit such as research and experiments, however it does not provide the same quality of data that results from directly communicating with consumers.
Location
V- This is valuable because it is easier to manage when your organization is specific to its locations. To use this to our advantage, we will make sure that the park supports different needs of different locations.
R- I’m hoping to put these dog parks in locations where it would be convenient for pet owners.  I know that the amount of space will vary in different locations, but it will be tailored to each location. This will be somewhat rare especially for many start-up businesses.
I- The way I’m hoping to do this may be a bit more difficult to imitate.
N- For this specific venture there are no other substitutable options that can provide a strategic location.
Word of Mouth
V-This is valuable because it’s a free form of marketing and can potentially generate more loyal consumers that are willing to use our services.
R- This form of marketing is not rare, however it is rare for the organization to have direct access to it and to be able to act fast when organization has things to fix.
I- It really depends on the company if it can be replicated. Hopefully, my organization will have a specific place in the mind of a consumer.
N-It is hard to find a substitute for word of mouth due to the fact that most people trust it over reviews or any other form of media.
Extra Amenities
V- This is valuable because it has the potential to makes us different from the rest of the competition.
R- The set-up of my pet park will be different from the other competitors and to continue this trend I will ensure that we are constantly improving our amenities and providing more perks for pet owners to visit us.
I- It is possible to imitate this, however I will ensure that my organization will have distinct differences and will continually update things so that it is more difficult to imitate
N-There are a couple things that can be substituted. For example, small things like the toy renting and doggy treat vending machines. However, there is no substitute for the pet sitting service we offer.
Great Customer Service
V- This is a necessity if you want your consumers to continue coming back
R- This somewhat rare, which is why only some companies are known for their great customer service.
I- It may be hard to imitate this because it really depends on the type of environment that the company wants to provide.
N- There is not really any substitute for great customer service.
Financial knowledge
V- This is needed when trying to start your own venture and having some knowledge of financial decision can save you a lot of stress in the long run.
R- This not rare, however it is a missing component in many start-ups.
I- It is not hard to imitate, but finding the time to learn these concepts is rare.
N- There is a replacement for this, which is to hire someone who can manage your finances, however as an owner you will have to lose some control of your company.
Creativity
V- This is valuable because it will enhance the experience of the organization and people really appreciate creativity.
R- This is somewhat rare, because most companies tend to stick to what is most comfortable.
I- It hard to imitate someone's creativity and if they are the first to have a creative product it is usually the first product the consumers depend on.
N- There is no replacement for creativity.
Event Planning Skills
V- This is useful for the organization that I’m coming up with because there will be community based activities, which will require valuable planning.
R- This is somewhat rare, because there have been many events that I’ve gone to that lack organization and structure.
I- It may be hard to imitate this skills, unless you have experience in event planning
N- You can hire someone else to plan the event, but you may lose some control of how the event should be.
Personal contacts with entrepreneurs
V- This is valuable because I can gain insight on how to pursue my own ventures. This can also provide information that most classes don’t teach.
R- This is not rare, but it is very useful to have available.
I- It is not possible to imitate someone with experience in entrepreneurship
N- It is hard to substitute unless you have experience pursuing successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurial ventures

My top resource will be contact with the consumer. This is the most important because they will be the ones that will provide the best feedback and will also be the ones to offer ideas to make my organization better for them. Since, most of my organization is centered on the community it is essential that I maintain a close relationship with my customers.

Week 10 Reading Reflection

Week 10 reading: Chapter 11 Kuratko

The thing that stood out the most in this chapter was how some concepts of accounting tied to entrepreneurship. It was nice to be refreshed on things like balance sheets and the cash flow statements. The part of the reading that was the most difficult to understand was when they talked about balancing the balance sheet. I always had trouble grasping the concept behind the process. If I could ask two questions to the author I would ask “What are some ways to lower operating expenses?” and “How accurate are the sales forecast usually?” There was nothing that I disagree with regarding this chapter, however I think the content of this chapter was very dense so spreading the information into two smaller chapter would have been easier to read.

Elevator Pitch No. 3

Reflect on the feedback you received from your last pitch.
I really liked some of the ideas that were recommended in the comments. Someone stated that it could also be used by students that have animal related majors. I really didn't think of that at the time. I also agree that I should have had better lighting in the last video. Also there was a lot of positive feedback on the visuals.
What did you change, based on the feedback?
I tried changing the lighting, however I can't seem to make it better, maybe it's my camera. However, I did add professional visuals based on the positive feedback last time and I went a little bit more in depth on how I am going to fund my venture.

My Secret Sauce

Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique.
  1. High tolerance: I have high tolerance with time consuming tasks and people with opposite opinions from mine.
  2. Active listener: I know when to listen and when is the best time to add something meaningful to the conversation. Though, it’s not a remarkable skill it is useful.
  3. Considerate: I take time to think about others before taking any actions that might affect them.
  4. Creative: I constantly think about ideas and potential things that I could do. However, one problem that I have is acting on them.
  5. Stable: I am usually a reasonable person and I rarely exhibit extreme emotions that may affect my judgement and ability to perform tasks.

Interviews
Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique.
  1. https://soundcloud.com/toni-wong-480180618/melanie-2016-03-12-13-42-041 This interviews was with my best friend. We spent most of our time together during high school so she based some of the characteristics from high school experiences.
  2. https://soundcloud.com/toni-wong-480180618/voice-0111 This interview was from my sister who has been with me for most of my life and has really been able to see me grow as a person.
  3. https://soundcloud.com/toni-wong-480180618/voice-0101 This third person I've know for four years and I met him through my sister.
  4. https://soundcloud.com/toni-wong-480180618/interview-4 This interview was from my brother. He usually has different viewpoints so it was interesting to listen to his opinion.
  5. https://soundcloud.com/toni-wong-480180618/interview-4 This interview was from my friend in South Carolina. I've know her for 3 years.
Reflect on the differences
I think overall what they said did reflect or support some of the things I've listed. I personally wouldn't change much of the list I made previously, but it was nice to hear the perspective of those close to me.  One thing that stood out to me was charismatic, which is something I believe I'm not. However, I do I agree that I can be critical at times. The reason why my assessment is different from other people's assessment of me is mostly due to perspectives and how long I've known them.

Week 9 Reading Reflection

Week 9 reading: Chapter 10 Kuratko

One thing that stood out to me was when the book stated that entrepreneurs usually overlook the process of identifying the market. It seems like it would be one of the first things you do before starting any entrepreneurial venture.  There was nothing in particular that was confusing to me mostly because I have learned about this topic in my marketing class. Two questions that I would ask the author are, “Is there a way to insure that questions are free of any bias language?” and “What are some methods to promote effective marketing on social media?” For the most part I agree with what the author said, however I think he should have more emphasis on the potential costs and risk of misuse that occurs when using marketing research methods. There have been some instances where marketing research was not effectively used and a good amount of money was lost.

Idea Napkin No. 2

  1. You : I am a 2nd year finance major at the University of Florida. So far, I have experience in public speaking and communicating with consumers and companies. I’m also always eager to learn different skills and gain more experiences. My aspirations is to successfully start my own entrepreneurial project that can benefit the community. If I were to start it, I feel that it would help me learn more about business and entrepreneurial acts. It would also provide a nice foundation for future projects.
  2. What are you offering to customers? The service that I will provide is basically a pet park that will give pet owners a different experience. Not only will it have the basic set up of a pet park but it will also have amenities that many pet owners will find useful and convenient. The most important aspects will be the general pet park, the pet sitting service, and the community based events. Other perks, will be a rental place for dog toys and various stations for dog treats and waste bags. This will solve the customer’s need by eliminating the multiple trips that they have to take to get the various services that Pup’s Park provides.
  3. Who are you offering it to? I am offering my service to pet owners, specifically dog owners. I would like to expand it to other smaller pets, however I still need to find a way to give pet owners with small pets the option to be separated from the bigger pets.
  4. Why do they care? Pet owners care about their pets and want the best for them. As of right now, most pet owners go to separate locations for a pet park and pet sitting. However, if both services can be provided in one location it would be easier for them and more enjoyable for their pet.

I think that these five elements fit together, especially since I’ve added more detail on the projects. The only concern is that it has a lot events going on so it may be harder to control. My solution for this is in the first couple of years I will test to see if all these services can work in this one location. The aspect that I need to work on the most would probably be targeting the consumers. I have the general idea for the consumers, however I could still go more in-depth.
Feedback memo
·         Be more detailed on your idea
·         Go more in depth in who you are
·         Be confident
·         Suggestion of a toy rental
·         Pet pick-up/drop off
I’m glad that I was able to reflect on the feedback and improve many aspects of my idea. I incorporated the feedback given to me by adding more detail primarily in the “You” section. There was also some suggestions on what people want from a pet park, which provided a nice foundation to work on. Overall, I think the feedback really brought the idea together.
